Héctor Alfredo Moreno Herrera (born 17 January 1988 in Culiacán, Sinaloa) is a Mexican football player that currently plays as central defender for Spanish La Liga club RCD Espanyol.

Moreno was a member of the Mexican national U-17 team that won the 2005 U-17 World Cup held in Peru. He also represented his country at the 2010 World Cup and at the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Club career

UNAM

Moreno's first 1st division team was UNAM. He joined the Pumas youth system at the age of 15, and then broke into the first team after winning the U-17 FIFA World Cup with the Mexican under-17 national team. Moreno quickly secured a position as a regular starter.

AZ Alkmaar

On 12 December 2007 it was announced that Moreno was transferred to the Dutch club AZ Alkmaar, and signed a contract for 4 and a half years. In only 8 appearances for the Dutch club, he had already scored his first goal. In April 2009 he was crowned, along with his team, as champions of the Eredivisie. That same year, he also won the Dutch Super Cup with AZ. He also signed a contract extension around the same time that would keep him with the club until 2014. On 7 February 2010 Moreno gave Alkmaar a 2–1 victory by scoring a goal in 87th minute. Moreno scored his 3rd goal of the season in a 6–2 victory for AZ Alkmaar on 13 March 2010. He would score his 4th goal of the season in a 3–0 victory for AZ on 18 April 2010.

Espanyol

On 22 June 2011 it was announced that Moreno would transfer to Spanish club Espanyol on a five year contract for an undisclosed fee.[2] On 28 August 2011 Moreno made his debut against RCD Mallorca. On 26 September he scored his first goal in a 1-3 loss to Levante UD.[3] On 3 December he would score his second league goal in a 1-2 loss to Valencia.[4]

International career

U-17 national team

Moreno was called up to participate at the 2005 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Peru. Mexico would go on to win the tournament, beating Brazil in the final 3-0.

U-20 national team

During the first game of the Mexican national team against Gambia at the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup, he played as a defensive midfielder and scored the second goal for the Mexican team during the second half. Mexico won the match 3–0, with other goals respectively by Giovani Dos Santos and Javier Hernández. Mexico would win their group, but would be eliminated in the quarter-finals.

2010 World Cup

He has been called up on various occasions Mexico. Moreno made his 2010 FIFA World Cup debut in the group match against France, in which Mexico won 2-0. Moreno would also start against Uruguay.

2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup

Moreno was part of the Mexican team that won the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup, playing in all of Mexico's games, and the final against the United States, which Mexico won 4-2.[5]
